Dealing with Aeries
There’s a reason you have to deal with Aeries. Aeries is the slow, occasionally irritating, and constantly reloading cousin of Turnitin. You’ll have to wait for it to catch up with you to load pages, so be prepared to click carefully. There’s a big lag, so do not click things more than once! (If you’re like me, you’ll end up creating five copies of one assignment due to impatience.) Below is what the homepage, https://awt.simivalleyusd.org/aeries.net/, looks like:
You don’t have to worry about anything on here except for the left-hand menu.
Attendance by Photo is where you click to take attendance, and Gradebook is where you go for entering scores. Here’s the gradebook page:
When you click on one of the periods, a convenient menu pops up. From there, you can edit assignments, add/change scores, and view classes by either assignment or by student. View it by assignment if you’re adding in a lot of scores for one particular assignment, and view it by student if you want to see a student’s individual gradebook and add in their missing assignments in particular.
Below is what a typical assignment page looks like. When you click on a box under # Correct (Score), it highlights and you can type in how many points they received. If you push enter, it jumps to the next student on the list. That’s convenient if you’re entering in a lot of scores in a row, alphabetically.
Click the arrow where it says Show more to see the details of an assignment. The checkboxes that are currently checked in the example below are the most important ones.
The Is Grading Completed? box is what takes a student’s grade on an assignment and adds it to their overall class grade, thus making it higher or lower based on its calculation of the score’s impact on their total class grade. It’s the most important part of Aeries. A student’s score can be entered and they can see it on their account, but if that box isn’t selected, it won’t be factored in to their overall grade. However, if you’re not done grading everyone’s assignments and their boxes are blank, then checking the box will turn everyone’s blank boxes into zeroes, and their grades could plummet, resulting in angry parents. Only check the box once the deadline has passed and you’ve finished grading all of the assignments given to you!
Alternatively, boxes turn green if a student’s score is above the technical maximum score. That means they have extra credit.
